How To Make Time Management Work For You - Not Against You!

J D Dean

Procrastination has long been identified as a productivity thief in both the business world and on a personal level. If people could name one thing that they could isolate as a reason for delaying projects or completing tasks, that word procrastination would come up more often than not. Implementing and following a sound time management process is one way of battling procrastinative habits.

First of all, a person has to admit to themselves that procrastination is a problem. Until you do this, then no amount of time management training will help. Whether it's a business project or a school project, once self delaying tactics have been identified, a person can eliminate them quite quickly with some simple time management solutions. Don't worry, as few as just twotactics can see you back on the road to satifying productivity levels.

Defining Your Time Management Strategy

As a starting point, figure out exactly how much time you have when commencing a project. If it's a school project then this is easy; a due date or a deadline is often attached to a school project and your teacher will more than likely not accept it late. On the other hand, if this is a household project, there will be a tendency to be more lenient. So look at how much time you have to complete the project and set yourself short term goals along the way.

An example would be if you are writing a paper. Simply set a deadline for it's completion, both for the rough draft and the completed edition. Make sure you stick to those dates for effective time management. This will give you good awareness of where you are in your project instead of trying to rush it at the last minute to get it completed. Be sure to set your final deadline a few days before your actual deadline. That way you have a chance to edit your paper and make any changes

Time Management Step-By-Step

Avoid trying to complete a huge task all in one night. This is unrealistic and by doing this, you'll more than likely give up in frustration declaring the job is too impossible. Instead of trying to complete a 15 page paper in a couple of hours, take it step-by-step, completing it a section at a time over several nights.

By creating a timeline with mini deadlines along the way, you will create less stress for yourself and have a more realistic expectation. By doing it this way, you will know exactly where you stand with your project. Better still, you'll enjoy it much more.

Time management isn't rocket science. It's just a matter of taking a commonsense approach and taking the necessary action to achieve your deadlines. By adding mini rewards (these can be whatever you like) to your completed steps, you'll soon start to see quick results as well as "running procrastination out of time!"
