Time Management At WorkJ D DeanIt doesn't matter whether you are self employed or work in an environment with other people, time management at work principles can greatly increase your productivity and reduce those all important stress levels. For someone on their own, accounting for their time is going to be a little more difficult because it's themselves they are being accountable too. In a work environment, you have your boss or supervisor to be accountable too. Can You Make Time Management Work? Sure you can. However, it will take a little discipline on your part but once you get the wheels in motion, it's amazing what a difference it can make in just about all facets of your life. A common answer to most people's time management and organizational problems is to get a diary. While they have their place in our day-to-day responsibilities, diaries are really just a superficial fix. Why? Because unless your diary can speak to you and remind you you haven't completed a task you've written in there then you may as well just try and commit things to memory. Time Management At Work Activity Statements Activity statements are a powerful indicator of exactly how you utilize your time. It's all there in black and white and you cannot hide from it. In fact, they will take a little getting used too because they don't lie. Activity statements have been described as a conscious in print. The first time I was introduced to the idea my reaction was one of... "but I know exactly how I use my time." It wasn't until I applied it that the harsh reality of how wasteful I was with my time actually hit home. Basically, the idea behind an activity statement is to log everything you do as you do it. After several days you'll begin to see a pattern emerge. The surprising aspect is in most cases, people who thought they were busy probably were but they weren't concentrating on results. Being busy is one thing; being busy in an unproductive fashion is another and an activity statement will highlight this fact. Time Management At Work - You Can Make It Work It's a little bit of a kick in the pants for a person's ego when they first analyze an activity statement. To realise it's no one else's fault but their own takes a little getting used too. But once you know where you are being unproductive, you can easily make the necessary adjustments and within no time at all, get your time management strategies working to your advantage. |
